Applying for home equity credit the bank wants proof mortgage was paid and that we own the home. I need records from 1999-2000

That doesn't make any sense.. Lenders always run title searches to see who owns the home and if there are any encumberments against the property.. they might ask you for a current mortgage statement if there is a mortgage.. But whatever you provide will be verified by a title report anyway, so I don't see why they would even ask you for it.. However, it shouldn't be difficult to find.. Here in AZ.. you can access the county recorders office online.. there you can get copies of all deed's and deed releases.. You probably have something similar there in CA.. If the task becomes too daunting for you, then call a local title company.. they can run a title search for you... but as far as your lender is concerned.. I would go back to them and tell them you don't have it, but ask them why they wouldn't just run a title search.. I'm a Broker here in Scottsdale AZ and I only lend in Arizona.
