I'm pretty sure that so long as the heating source is compliant with local building codes, it's properly installed, and is adequate for the size home, and can maintain a minimum temperature, then it's acceptable with USDA.. They go by FHA guidelines, and the actual requirement is a bit vague.. It states "heating adequate for healthful and comfortable living conditions;" I just closed a VA loan here in AZ where the property has a wood burning stove for heat.. the loan went though without any issues.
