Buying a second home with complications

Hi, I want to ask if it’s possible to buy a property as a primary home even if you do not work in the same state as the property? I work in New York and I’m buying in VA. My wife will live in the VA home full time with my kids. I will be staying with my parents in NY and traveling back and forth at times.
