How can I save on costs on an FHA construction loan?

I plan to apply for an FHA construction loan since we've acquired land in a promising location. Are there ways to save money by doing some of the work on your own? If there are ways to save would it be better to get a conventional loan instead? We plan to build by the end of this year and I want to ensure that I'm getting the right loan product for the build.
