How long before you can hear back on an FHA loan for first time home buyers?

If you are talking about underwriting, should be no more than three days from submission. FHA does not underwrite the lender does unless it's a special situation that the Lender needs to get an approval directly from FHA on a loan that does not meet guidelines. If you are working with one of the big on-line Mortgage Factories, at least 2-3 days, and don't expect to hear from them on weekends either. Our customers hear back in just a few hours. FHA doesn't do loans, lenders do, and then underwrite to FHA guidelines. So it all depends on the lender you are working with, and if you are talking basic pre-approval or full underwriting. Basic pre-approval should be a day or less. Full blown underwriting, once given to underwriters is usually just a few days, but there is a lot of stuff to be done on a file before it gets delivered to the underwriter.
