Is it possible to get a VA loan with a 550 credit score?

I already have a COE and I was wondering what it if any options are out there for me? I went through a bad divorce and it destroyed my credit I am just now getting it taken care of and I want a house to live in, but if it will be worlds better to get my credit up I will wait. I did read that with a VA COE it doesn't matter what your credit is any truth there? by emilys_162_804 from Waukegan, Illinois. Oct 3rd 2012 Reply

There is no way you will get a loan of any kind with a 550 FICO score, unless you wanna pay loan shark rates. Work with a local mortgage broker and get some advice on repairing your credit, then, after a year or so if your score is more like a 640, you can re-approach getting a mortgage.

You should be able to get a refinance done at 580. It would be an exception request, but it is possible. I am an Illinois lender in Schaumburg. Please feel free to email me and we can talk about how to get your score up. It depends on what your credit report looks like, but it may be faster than you think. barb.lanis@1amllc.com

Can't do a VA loan. You need to get your middle credit score to at least 620 and some lenders require 640 for VA. Good luck. If you want a good credit repair specialist let me know and I will email you his contact info. Team@BestMortgageOption.com

Emily S,Work on improving your credit before you purchase the home. Most lenders have "overlays" on government loan programs. That means the lenders (investors) impose stricter rules on credit scores than Freddie and Fannie(FHA, VA) do. So when FHA says they will endorse a loan with a 550 score, most lenders are looking for a 640 minimum score to minimize potential loss.Don't waste time looking for a low credit score VA loan, improve your credit and then do the purchase.Ken Baltes
