my square footage of my house is 1140 but the tax assessor has 1242 on my deed should I have this changed

It depends. If I remember correctly, in California, property taxes are calculated based on a formula that starts with the Purchase price, and not the square footage. If that is correct, what benefit do you hope to achieve by having the county make your home look smaller? Secondly, unless you actually have verifiable and documented information on the actual square footage, you would have to pay good money to hire a firm to provide it, and again, for what benefit? Me?
