I'd like to know that, if I purchase a home as a non-US citizen and take out a US-based mortgage (assuming I qualify), can I add my US-citizen spouse as a co-borrower (assuming it reduces the rate and increases the borrow amount)? Assumptions:- My spouse earns more than me- Avoiding US tax exposure to my spouseThank you by robmit_241_489 from Olathe, Kansas. Sep 16th 2011
Adding a US Citizen as co borrower will not lower the rate. The lender will always assume worst of all borrowers on an application.. I can tell you though you have a tough road ahead of you. Not many programs out there for non US Citizen borrowers. It's more like: possible, that the US Citizen Spouse could apply on his/her own, and then add you to the title after closing... Might be a better way to go, but you should get with a local mortgage broker (not a bank) and discuss your scenario with him. He has a vast number of lenders he deals with and can guide you in the right direction... WilliamAcres.com
