Should I go with a local lender?

First time homebuyer and I want to ask if Rocket Mortgage is any good? Are there programs available that can assist with a down payment? Friends say that a local lender is better and can close faster. I live in Texas by joshmack179 from Dallas, Texas. Sep 1st 2022 Reply

Well...there are varying opinions on Rocket...they use a call center. For down payment assistance(DPA) you would be better off with using a local lender as they will most likely have knowledge of any local DPA programs as well as state DPA programs. Personal opinion would be avoid Rocket and go with a local lender. I can refer if needed. I am only licensed in CA.

Local mortgage brokers win the vast majority of the time, but if you'd like inexperienced high pressure call center people, and some of the highest rates in the country, they are a great choice. They also typically do not have access to any local or state down payment assistance programs. I can't help you in TX, as I lend in MN, WI, IA, ND, and SD only.
