USDA wants to see your assets (checking / savings). There is no minimum required to get approval. But if you have too much money in checking / savings, the loan can (and does) sometimes get denied. What is generally considered too much? If you have enough money to put 5% down on a conventional loan.

They will ask to see your assets, not having assets will not cause you to be denied.

Does the USDA loan require a certain amount in a savings account? I live with my boyfriend who owns his home out right and I do not pay rent. My credit is fine but I don't have that much in savings.

YES, they will want to see your checking and savings accounts, and it depends on your loan amount , and monthly payment , how much they would want to have in reserves linda yourloanpartnerforlife@live.com

I checked the underwriting guidelines and it states that need to have substantial amount in savings. I am not sure what substantial means to them though.
